Per usual Dr. Lewis-McCoy you've written a dope post on educational outcomes for young black men. As someone who has attended elite white educational institutions for most of my life, it's interesting to think about these issues from an intellectual perspective. While i [don't think] my parents ever fielded any requests for disability testing, I do know schools suggested that I attend a slew of additional therapies to "assist" in my learning process.

I think "helicopter parenting" is a real thing with tangible consequences. With that being said, as a non-parent I'm assessing I game I've never played. I, as a person, would have done some things differently and probably as a scholar would have been less authoritarian and less authoritative. However, that's the view of what an individual parent could do to influence their child's path, authoritative and authoritarian parenting unchecked and within the context of a school with unequal resources means that opportunities are hoarded by dominant parents. I think having parent support groups that systematically worked on the well-being of Black kids and advocated back towards the school regarding needs and treatment would be most powerful - for individual and collective families.

Interested in your response to "helicopter parenting." Idris' parents seemed almost too controlling - charting out Idris' 24-hour schedule for example, monitoring his every movent and action, etc.

Also interested in your thoughts about Idris' parents shutting down sports as an option. His father seemed uncomfortable with his son's interest in basketball.
