After watching it last night, I am unfortunately disappointed. I was expecting a lot more depth to the film--I feel like it relied too much on the supposed "novelty" of the subject (OMG a Latino former drug dealer current hip hop artist and activist with children who converts to Islam! Won't this make a great docu!) I wanted it to dive deeper, into the role of hip-hop for sure, but also into questions of identity, creating a new blended family, political awakening that came with spiritual awakening. But yeah, like you said no film can do everything...I just think many documentary filmmakers rely too much on how interesting their subject is without telling an insightful and compelling story.
