Warning, I did not see this GMA piece but read the report on their Web site: As a journalist, GMA's Crofton piece seems to have been very much underreported and just touched the surface of a very complex issue -- Kudos Dumi for bringing the true story here to light... GMA was clearly trying to turn the story into a look at the rise of Suburban Gangs (the majority of which are predominantly white btw!) -- But because they only had one side of the story here -- being the victim's family -- it turned out to be uncomfortable to read/watch and blatantly biased, as we all agree... According to the Washington Post, the victim, "Christopher had inadvertently found himself in the middle of a dispute between two groups of wannabe gang members at Arundel High School, where Christopher was once enrolled. Some of his elementary school friends, his family members said, were apparently members of a group calling itself the New Threat, and Christopher was with them about five weeks ago when they had a run-in with the other group, called the East Side Diamonds." -- this adds a little more context, huh? Just a little?... Hopefully GMA will learn that they can develop a stronger audience by thoroughly reporting on communities, getting all sides of the story and providing context to their features instead of sensationalizing a sensitive topic and, as a result, perpetuating racial paranoia... Thanks for a good post, Dumi!
