Only asking bc I recently moved to Philly from Selma where I curated exhibits at the National Voting Rights Museum - always looking for Foot Soldiers and unsung heros.

p.s. Can't STAND toure and hope he gets exactly what he deserves...although I hear your point, can't say I agree.

I have to say that I disagree with your resolution. He needs to be fired because that will hold him accountable. Speech is not free; it always comes at cost and that is what needs to be recognized. Every action that denigrates Black women affirms the insitutionalization of the sexism and racism that we face. Why must the listener always carry the burden of someone's so called free speech? Losing his position will teach Toure most assuredly that he needs to watch his language though it will not change his beliefs. Black women deserve better than to be daily assaulted.

Toure offered that not all female slaves were raped and that some may have entered sexual relationships with slave masters with freedom as a goal. To be honest, I don't see the big deal is. It certainly shows a lack of understanding of what it means to have free will as human property but I can't find the insult in it.

Many people who are of mixed background understand the questions surrounding love/sex/oppression very well when it comes to the dynamics between their forbearers. I think instead of readying our pitchforks to defend the venerated images of our ancestors, we should be discussing and complicating their identities. This is a teachable moment and firing Toure would end the conversation.

I already wrote a comment and it got deleted!!!!
anyway, what I basically said was that I agree with you wholeheartedly. GREAT POST! no accountability will come from Toure being fired from MSNBC - none! just another guy silenced without any behavior modification. Toure perverted my people's history, demeaned black women, compromised the integrity of his career - he needs heavy duty work
