Amen! I saw the movie, and thought it was great. The culture in New Orleans was mixed, and positively portrayed. Most of the adults (both male and female) we're good role models, and I think that's what important for the kiddies to see. Not insignificant details about color this and race that. High fives all 'round for Disney. :-)

As a mixed kid, I find all the hype about where Prince Naveen is from totally offensive, and just down right stupid. What's so wrong with inter-racial relationships? Can't black people and white people live happily ever after? whites and asians? latinos and arabs? It has NOTHING to do with Disney not being ready to portray strong male characters, look at Tiana's father, he was awesome. Hell, if anything Disney was being progressive by 'casting' an olive-skinned unidentifiable Latino-sounding/Indian-named/pseudo-Creole prince. It shows that being a mixed race couples actually can be a reality... but clearly to a society whose going ape shit about 'where Prince Naveen is from and why isn't he black' is really not ready to move passed the whole race thing...

It's also interesting because "Naveen" is a very common male-identified Indian name. Is the prince supposed to be South Asian. I've heard very little about this movie honestly because I think disney is the devil.

What's so bizarre about the choice of naming the prince "Naveen," is that it's an unambiguously East Indian name. It's entirely plausible that an Indian, from the West Coast or from the Indies across the pond, managed to land in early New Orleans, but it's not as if Disney's going for verisimilitude here; the dude is a frog. It just seems like this prince inhabits either some post-racial identity or the generic space of the global other (Indian named, Maldonian, brown but not that brown, voiced by a Brazilian).
